Conservation has never tasted so good. The Catalina Island Conservancy has teamed up with Beachwood Brewing in Long Beach to create Foxy by Nature, a limited-edition IPA that supports conservation. The community is invited to attend a Foxtober celebration and release party on Oct. 4.
“It might seem like an unexpected partnership, but it actually makes a lot of sense,” explained Conservancy Education Programs Manager Raelene Child. “People come together for the beer, but they stay for the conversation and community. We saw an opportunity to bring Catalina and conservation into that discussion and reach people on the mainland.”
The event will feature family-friendly games like themed bingo, along with giveaways highlighting Isla, the Catalina Island fox mascot. Stop by interactive fox stations to learn how the Conservancy monitors Catalina Island foxes (typically starting in October, hence “Foxtober”) in the wild and meet members of the conservation team. Beachwood has collaborated with nonprofits in the past and is excited to bring people together over the important topic of conservation.
“These collaborations are an opportunity to use beer as a platform to introduce customers to organizations doing meaningful work in the community and beyond,” said Beachwood Brewing Marketing Director Trina Kardemark. “There’s something especially fun about taking a subject that might not typically intersect with a brewery — like conservation or wildlife — and turning it into something people can experience, talk about and enjoy together.”
Foxy by Nature is an ode to the Catalina Island fox, an animal that only lives on Catalina, and that made a remarkable recovery after nearly going extinct in 1999 due to a disease outbreak on Catalina.
“The Catalina Island fox is a unique part of Catalina’s natural heritage,” Child explained. “Every pint gives us an opportunity to share that story with people who may not know much about Catalina or the work happening here. And it’s a pretty fun way to celebrate the fox and community partnership.”
“The Catalina Island fox is a unique California story, and the Conservancy’s work is something worth celebrating,” added Kardemark. “If someone comes in because they love beer and leaves curious about wildlife, conservation, or the work of the Catalina Island Conservancy, that’s exactly the kind of connection Beachwood hopes to create through collaborations like this.”
The beer is described as having a bright, zesty lime character alongside tropical and subtle floral notes. It has the citrus-forward character Beachwood loves in a hop, with a little something unexpected.
Malt: Canadian Pilsner.
Hops: Limequat, NZ Cascade, Krush Lupocore, Krush Cryo.
6.7% ABV and 70 IBU.
A portion of every pint and 4-pack sold at Beachwood will be donated to the Conservancy to support conservation. Click here to learn more about the fox’s story and here for the event page.
