A New Leadership Chapter for the Catalina Island Conservancy

News

Jan. 15, 2025

Your continued support has enabled the Catalina Island Conservancy to safeguard one of the most extraordinary places on earth for more than 50 years, protecting 88% of the Island and more than 60 species of plants and wildlife found nowhere else.

As we begin a new year, the Conservancy is entering a new chapter of leadership. President and CEO Whitney Latorre has decided to step away from her role next month to spend more time with family and explore new opportunities.

During her tenure, Whitney helped the team launch Operation Protect Catalina Island, an ambitious island restoration plan that combines conservation initiatives, habitat restoration and wildfire prevention under one coordinated effort.

This bold vision reflects the Conservancy’s enduring dedication to the Island’s future, and Whitney’s contributions to its development have positioned the organization, our world-class team of advocates, and our Interim President and CEO David Solomon for the critical work ahead. This work is a cornerstone of the Conservancy’s strategic plan and represents the commitment our Board of Directors and Benefactor Members have made to protect this Island.

A longtime admirer of the Conservancy, David brings decades of experience leading both for-profit and nonprofit organizations through transitions, with deep expertise in collaborative leadership, fundraising, financial management, and strategic planning. He is passionate about conservation and understands the ecological issues at stake on Catalina Island and beyond, including the Conservancy’s goal of sharing what we learn with the world.

The Conservancy is fortunate to have a talented and dedicated team of conservation scientists, educators, land stewards, and operations professionals who wake up every day committed to protecting this irreplaceable ecosystem. Their expertise and passion are the foundation of everything we do, from restoring native plant populations to welcoming visitors to our trails, beaches, and wildlands. This team, supported by a committed and engaged Board of Directors and Benefactor Members, ensures that the Conservancy’s important work continues without interruption.

Our mission is clear, and our resolve is unwavering. We remain steadfast in our commitment to Catalina, to its residents, and to all who cherish this special place. We believe that effective stewardship of the Island is a thoughtful balance of protecting and restoring our native habitats, teaching and advancing our environmental knowledge, and encouraging others to enjoy our magnificent natural wildlands.

In the coming weeks, you will hear more about our search for a permanent President and CEO — which is beginning — to carry forward the Conservancy’s legacy and mission to protect the Island for future generations.

As we look ahead, we do so with gratitude for you, for those who help sustain our work, for the close knit Island community that inspires us, and for the dedicated team members who bring our values to life every day.

Together, we will continue to care for Catalina Island, ensuring it remains one of the most beautiful and unique places in the world that is open to all.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support.

Sincerely,

Maureen Ramer
Catalina Island Conservancy Chair, Board of Directors
