Catalina Fungi Excursion

Join mycologist Stu Pickell for a field excursion into the interior of Catalina to learn about and discover the fascinating fungi inhabiting the island! This event will begin at the Trailhead visitor center on Sunday, February 23rd at 10am and participants will return to Avalon by 2pm.  

Boat fare on the Catalina Express is not included and participants will need to bring their own lunch. Participants should come prepared for being outside in the field, standing and walking. Sturdy, close-toed shoes and a re-fillable water bottle are required. Some walking on uneven terrain should be expected.

About the Instructor:

Stu Pickell is a naturalist, mycologist and acclaimed photographer, serving as the Vice President of the Los Angeles Mycological Society and as a Field Collector with Fungal Diversity Survey. A Southern California native, he spent time living in Portland, Oregon where he became captivated by mushrooms, eventually returning to live in Los Angeles where he now works to document fungi from Southern California’s underexplored habitats. When not in the field in search of fungi, Stu works as an engineer on NASA’s Deep Space Network, managed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
