Working to Advance Scientific Research

October 3, 2024

The Catalina Island Conservancy is pleased to announce its role in advancing scientific research on deer movement—particularly how external factors like seasonal hunting pressures and drought impact their behavior—as part of our ongoing efforts to contribute to shared scientific data. The data collected will expand on previous work and will be shared with university partners. While the study will assist in better understanding the broad behavior of deer in general, it will also help the Conservancy identify new fire-prone locations due to the browsing by deer of island-protective cover and the repopulation of non-native flammable grasses in those locations. To acquire this information, 16 deer have been collared and will be tracked over the next several months. The GPS-enabled collars are designed to naturally fall off in approximately one year at which time they will be collected.
