Join National Geographic Explorer in Residence Tara Roberts and the Catalina Island Conservancy for an unforgettable evening as she shares her groundbreaking work documenting the search for, and recovery of, sunken slave ships around the world.

Inspired by a photograph she saw at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History & Culture, Roberts joined an underwater archaeology group, beginning a transformative journey around world to uncover lost narratives of resistance and resilience, and reconnected with her own ancestral roots. Through deeply personal storytelling and rich historical context, Roberts will share her exploration of identity, belonging and the power of reclaiming forgotten histories.
