Catalina Island Conservancy Euthanizes Injured Bison to Prevent Suffering

Notices

Monday, Jan. 27

A bison with a long-term injury to its hind leg has been humanely euthanized after the Catalina Island Conservancy determined its condition had grown more serious. The injury, which affected the animal for years, had increasingly limited its ability to walk.

After review by a veterinarian, it was determined that the best course of action was to euthanize the bison to prevent prolonged suffering. The Conservancy’s role as caretaker of 88% of Catalina Island is to step in only when necessary and to consider the well-being of the animal.

About the Catalina Bison Herd

The bison herd, introduced to Catalina Island by Hollywood filmmakers in the 1920s, is managed responsibly at approximately 80 animals today. The Conservancy monitors the herd closely to reduce negative impacts on native plants, animals and the overall biodiversity of the Island.

While these decisions are never easy, they are made with the guidance of expert wildlife managers and large animal veterinarians, reflecting our commitment to responsibly care for Catalina Island’s unique ecosystem.
