DESCRIPTION:Register Today!		\n \nJoin us for our free monthly after-school series on Monday\, April 20\, 2026\, from 2:15 p.m. to 4 p.m.  \nEach month\, we’ll explore a new theme and engage in hands-on activities that celebrate the natural wonders of Catalina. This month’s theme is Spring into Stewardship. We will learn all about how kids can care for Catalina Island while enjoying snacks and making an upcycled craft.  \nAdditional Details: \n\nLocation: Trailhead Visitor Center\nTransportation:  All Avalon School participants will be picked up from the lower turnaround at school and shuttled to the Trailhead by Conservancy staff. Please choose your pick-up option when registering (parent pick-up at the Trailhead at 4 p.m.\, shuttle back to school\, or allowed to walk home from the Trailhead).\nCost: Free for all participants.\nSnacks provided for all participants.\n\nStudents must have a signed permission slip to participate. Permission slips will be distributed in classrooms and are due by Friday April 16\, 2026. For those who register online\, a link to the permission slip (Google Form) will be sent via email after registration. DESCRIPTION:Register Today!		\n \n\nPrepare for the unexpected with this engaging\, hands-on introduction to wilderness medicine\, taught on Catalina Island. The course is in partnership between the Conservancy and the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). If you like to take short trips relatively close to medical resources\, work at wilderness camps\, enjoy weekend family outdoor activities\, or recreate outdoors\, this course is for you. \nWho is this for? \nWilderness first aid is great for people of all experience levels\, and is best suited for those who recreate outdoors where EMS response can be expected in a timely manner (fewer than eight hours). You’ll learn the Patient Assessment System\, how to provide effective first aid treatments for injuries and illnesses common in the outdoors\, and how to make appropriate evacuation decisions. \nThis course takes place both in the classroom and in outdoor settings regardless of weather\, so come prepared for wet\, muddy\, cold or hot environments. \n\n\nWhen: April 18-19\, 2025 (8 a.m. – 5 p.m. each day) \nWhere: The Trailhead Visitor Center and Avalon City Park \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration and all customer service for this course are handled by NOLS Wilderness Medicine.

SUMMARY:Catalina Tile Making Workshop and Wildlands Excursion
DESCRIPTION:Register Today!		\n \nDiscover the natural and cultural story of Catalina Island through the art of tile-making in this special Women of Catalina workshop. Robin Cassidy\, a local ceramic artist\, will guide participants through the workshop. Cassidy is the founder of Silver Canyon Pottery and has been a cornerstone of Avalon’s creative community since 1988. While creating their own Catalina-inspired tile\, participants will learn about the Island’s geology and how its landscapes and organic materials have shaped artistic traditions. Tiles created in the workshop will be glazed and fired\, then carefully shipped to your home.  \nAfter the studio experience\, a Conservancy naturalist will guide participants into Catalina’s wildlands to explore remote landscapes and examine the soils\, mudstones and natural clays that form the Island’s foundation. Along the way\, you may encounter native wildlife and gain insight into how geology influences Catalina’s ecosystems\, history and art.  \nWhat to Bring \n\nA packed lunch\nSunscreen\nA reusable water bottle\nLayered clothing\, as temperatures may vary throughout the day\n\nImportant to Know \nThe first part of the workshop begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Trailhead Visitor Center\, where a complimentary shuttle will transport participants to Silver Canyon Pottery (22 Pebbly Beach Rd\, Avalon\, CA 90704). Shuttles will also transport participants into the wildlands for the exploration part of the program and will return to Avalon at 3 p.m. Ferry tickets are not included in the cost of this workshop and should be purchased early to ensure a seat is available. Same day ferry riders from Long Beach should reserve the 6 a.m. Catalina Express boat. \nParticipants should come prepared for being outside in the field\, standing and walking. Sturdy\, close-toed shoes and a re-fillable water bottle are required. Some walking on uneven terrain should be expected.

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT: Guided Spring Members Hike with Scenic Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the first weekend of spring and feel inspired on this special guided members hike with lunch on Saturday\, March 21. A Conservancy guide will lead hikers through 7.5 miles of trail\, navigating lush green hills dotted with seasonal wildflowers. \nThe moderately challenging hike begins at Blackjack Campground\, travels to Inspiration Point and returns to Haypress Reservoir\, where we’ll enjoy lunch together. Along the way\, hikers will have the opportunity to explore Catalina’s unique flora and fauna while connecting with fellow Conservancy supporters and staff. \nA special discounted rate of $30 is available to members\, however\, non-members are welcome to join for $60 and learn about the benefits of being part of the Catalina Island Conservancy and its community of Island supporters. \nWhat to Know \nMeet at the Trailhead Visitor Center in Avalon at 8 a.m.  Conservancy vehicles will depart for Blackjack Campground drop-off at 8:15 a.m. \nLunch will be provided at Haypress Reservoir at the conclusion of the hike. \nHikers will be transported back to the Trailhead by 2:30 p.m. \nIf you plan to depart Long Beach for same day travel\, book a ticket on the 6 a.m. ferry. DESCRIPTION:Register Today!		\n \nThis 7-hour excursion into the wildlands of Catalina Island expands on the concepts covered in Naturalist 1 Training. Education staff will guide you through a course-work book while exploring the landscape and ecosystem of Catalina. \nThe Naturalist 2 Training field excursion runs from 8:30am-3:30pm and begins and ends at the Conservancy’s Trailhead Visitor Center. \nCourse workbook is included in the course fee. Boat fare on the Catalina Express is not included. Participants should make those reservations as soon as possible if they do not live on the Island. Lunch at the Restaurant at the Airport in the Sky is not included and participants need to bring or buy their own lunch. \nParticipants need to come prepared for a full day outside in the field\, standing and walking. Sturdy\, close-toed shoes\, sun protection\, and a re-fillable water bottle are required. Some walking on uneven terrain should be expected.

But it also provides ideal conditions for a range of fungi to grow. \nTag along for a day of fun-gi when we venture into Catalina’s wildlands. Our guide is Stu Pickell\, a veteran mycophile\, award-winning macrophotographer and avid community scientist. After getting a taste for mushroom foraging while living in the Pacific Northwest\, he’s spent the last 10 years in Los Angeles documenting the fungal biodiversity of his native Southern California. He currently works as a field collector for the Fungal Diversity Survey’s CA FUNDIS project\, the first state-funded fungal documentation and conservation project of its kind. Learn about Island fungus and discover how different types of mycelium grow and benefit the broader ecosystem. \n \nThis event will begin at the Trailhead Visitor Center on Saturday\, Feb. 28 at 10 a.m. A complimentary shuttle will take participants into the wildlands and return to the Trailhead by 2 p.m. \nWhat to Bring \n\nA packed lunch\nSunscreen\nA reusable water bottle\nLayered clothing\, as temperatures may vary throughout the day\n\nImportant to Know \nParticipants should come prepared for being outside in the field\, standing and walking. Join us for a guided\, place-based experience led by a Catalina Island Conservancy naturalists. Participants will explore symbiotic relationships found across the Island\, learning how plants\, animals and ecosystems interact and depend on one another.  \nArtist Adrienne Kinsella will guide participants in watercolor techniques designed for painting in the outdoors. Through demonstration and hands-on practice\, participants will learn how to observe closely\, capture natural forms and translate ecological relationships into expressive watercolor studies while working directly in the field.  \nDesigned for adults of all skill levels\, this workshop encourages curiosity\, careful observation and creative expression. \nWhen and Where \nMeet at the Trailhead Visitor Center (708 Crescent Ave) in Avalon at 9:30 a.m. for a shuttle into the wildlands. Participants will return to the Trailhead at 3 p.m. \nImportant to Know \nPlease bring your own snacks and lunch\, along with a reusable water bottle.
