This month’s theme is Catalina in Bloom. We will learn all about Catalina wild flowers while enjoying snacks and making a flower craft.  \nAdditional Details: \n\nLocation: Trailhead Visitor Center\nTransportation:  All Avalon School participants will be picked up from the lower turnaround at school and shuttled to the Trailhead by Conservancy staff. Please choose your pick-up option when registering (parent pick-up at the Trailhead at 4 p.m.\, shuttle back to school\, or allowed to walk home from the Trailhead).\nCost: Free for all participants.\nSnacks provided for all participants.\n\nStudents must have a signed permission slip to participate. Permission slips will be distributed in classrooms and are due by Friday May 15\, 2026. For those who register online\, a link to the permission slip (Google Form) will be sent via email after registration. DESCRIPTION:Register Today!		\n \nTravel into Catalina Island’s wildlands for People\, Plants and Purpose\, an immersive excursion that explores the deep relationships between people and native plant life through an Indigenous lens. Our guide Gabrielle Rocha Crowe will share traditional ecological knowledge that highlights how plants have long been used for food\, medicine\, tools and cultural practices.  \nParticipants will journey through diverse island habitats\, engaging in sensory-based learning\, storytelling and place-based observation. Along the way\, our guide will introduce key native species and share their historical and contemporary uses\, emphasizing ethical harvesting practices\, reciprocity and respect for the land.  \nThis program is designed to foster a deeper understanding of the connection between culture\, ecology and stewardship. By centering Indigenous perspectives\, People\, Plants and Purpose encourages participants to reflect on their own relationship with nature while gaining insight into practices that continue to shape environmental resilience today.  \nAs Co-Chair and Secretary of Environmental Sciences for the Gabrielino-Shoshone Nation of Southern California\, Crowe bridges cultural knowledge and environmental science. Her work includes collaboration with organizations like the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve. In her partnership with the Conservancy\, she supports efforts to integrate Indigenous perspectives into conservation\, education and land stewardship.  \nWhat to Bring \n\nA reusable water bottle\nSunscreen\nLayered clothing\, as temperatures may vary throughout the day\n\nImportant to Know \nMeet at the Trailhead Visitor Center for a free shuttle into the wildlands. Upon event completion\, we will return to the Trailhead. \nFerry tickets are not included in the cost of this workshop and should be purchased early to ensure a seat is available. Same day ferry riders from Long Beach should reserve the 6 a.m. Catalina Express boat. \nParticipants should come prepared for being outside in the field\, standing and walking. Sturdy\, close-toed shoes and a re-fillable water bottle are required. Some walking on uneven terrain should be expected.

SUMMARY:City Nature Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Register Today!		\n \nDocument local biodiversity as part of a team while hiking and exploring Catalina’s wildlands. Findings documented during this experience will support City Nature Challenge\, an international event that tracks urban biodiversity\, providing valuable “research-grade” data to scientists\, conservationists and land managers for monitoring species and habitats. \nWorking in small groups\, we’ll survey different areas of the landscape\, learn how to observe and document species\, and contribute our findings to this international effort using iNaturalist. No science background or experience is necessary to participate. Conservancy Senior Naturalist Alexandra Brainerd will open and close the event with a short discussion. \nAbout the Challenge \nWhat started in 2016 as a competition between Los Angeles and San Francisco\, the City Nature Challenge (CNC) has grown into an international event that inspires people around the world to find and document wildlife in their own cities. Run by the Community Science teams at the California Academy of Sciences and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHM)\, the CNC is an annual 4-day global bio-blitz at the end of April\, where cities collaborate to see what can be accomplished when we all work toward a common goal.  \nCity Nature Challenge participants not only learn more about local nature\, but also make their cities a better place for all living beings. \n What to Bring:  \n\nBagged lunch\nSun protection\nSmart phone\nClosed-toed shoes\n\nImportant to Know \nWe will meet at the Trailhead Visitor Center for an iNaturalist briefing with Conservancy Senior Naturalist Alexandra Brainerd before departing for the wildlands. A complimentary shuttle will transport participants into the wildlands around 10:30 a.m. to begin the challenge. We will eat lunch in the field. DESCRIPTION:Register Today!		\n \nThis 7-hour excursion into the wildlands of Catalina Island expands on the concepts covered in Naturalist 1 Training. Education staff will guide you through a course-work book while exploring the landscape and ecosystem of Catalina. \nThe Naturalist 2 Training field excursion runs from 8:30am-3:30pm and begins and ends at the Conservancy’s Trailhead Visitor Center. \nCourse workbook is included in the course fee. Boat fare on the Catalina Express is not included. Participants should make those reservations as soon as possible if they do not live on the Island. Lunch at the Restaurant at the Airport in the Sky is not included and participants need to bring or buy their own lunch. \nParticipants need to come prepared for a full day outside in the field\, standing and walking. We will learn all about how kids can care for Catalina Island while enjoying snacks and making an upcycled craft.  \nAdditional Details: \n\nLocation: Trailhead Visitor Center\nTransportation:  All Avalon School participants will be picked up from the lower turnaround at school and shuttled to the Trailhead by Conservancy staff. Please choose your pick-up option when registering (parent pick-up at the Trailhead at 4 p.m.\, shuttle back to school\, or allowed to walk home from the Trailhead).\nCost: Free for all participants.\nSnacks provided for all participants.\n\nStudents must have a signed permission slip to participate. Permission slips will be distributed in classrooms and are due by Friday April 16\, 2026. The course is in partnership between the Conservancy and the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). If you like to take short trips relatively close to medical resources\, work at wilderness camps\, enjoy weekend family outdoor activities\, or recreate outdoors\, this course is for you. \nWho is this for? \nWilderness first aid is great for people of all experience levels\, and is best suited for those who recreate outdoors where EMS response can be expected in a timely manner (fewer than eight hours). You’ll learn the Patient Assessment System\, how to provide effective first aid treatments for injuries and illnesses common in the outdoors\, and how to make appropriate evacuation decisions. \nThis course takes place both in the classroom and in outdoor settings regardless of weather\, so come prepared for wet\, muddy\, cold or hot environments. \n\n\nWhen: April 18-19\, 2025 (8 a.m. – 5 p.m. each day) \nWhere: The Trailhead Visitor Center and Avalon City Park \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration and all customer service for this course are handled by NOLS Wilderness Medicine.

SUMMARY:Catalina Tile Making Workshop and Wildlands Excursion
DESCRIPTION:Register Today!		\n \nDiscover the natural and cultural story of Catalina Island through the art of tile-making in this special Women of Catalina workshop. Robin Cassidy\, a local ceramic artist\, will guide participants through the workshop. Cassidy is the founder of Silver Canyon Pottery and has been a cornerstone of Avalon’s creative community since 1988. While creating their own Catalina-inspired tile\, participants will learn about the Island’s geology and how its landscapes and organic materials have shaped artistic traditions. Tiles created in the workshop will be glazed and fired\, then carefully shipped to your home.  \nAfter the studio experience\, a Conservancy naturalist will guide participants into Catalina’s wildlands to explore remote landscapes and examine the soils\, mudstones and natural clays that form the Island’s foundation. Along the way\, you may encounter native wildlife and gain insight into how geology influences Catalina’s ecosystems\, history and art.  \nWhat to Bring \n\nA packed lunch\nSunscreen\nA reusable water bottle\nLayered clothing\, as temperatures may vary throughout the day\n\nImportant to Know \nThe first part of the workshop begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Trailhead Visitor Center\, where a complimentary shuttle will transport participants to Silver Canyon Pottery (22 Pebbly Beach Rd\, Avalon\, CA 90704). Shuttles will also transport participants into the wildlands for the exploration part of the program and will return to Avalon at 3 p.m. Ferry tickets are not included in the cost of this workshop and should be purchased early to ensure a seat is available. Same day ferry riders from Long Beach should reserve the 6 a.m. Catalina Express boat. \nParticipants should come prepared for being outside in the field\, standing and walking. Sturdy\, close-toed shoes and a re-fillable water bottle are required. Some walking on uneven terrain should be expected.

DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the first weekend of spring and feel inspired on this special guided members hike with lunch on Saturday\, March 21. A Conservancy guide will lead hikers through 7.5 miles of trail\, navigating lush green hills dotted with seasonal wildflowers. \nThe moderately challenging hike begins at Blackjack Campground\, travels to Inspiration Point and returns to Haypress Reservoir\, where we’ll enjoy lunch together. Along the way\, hikers will have the opportunity to explore Catalina’s unique flora and fauna while connecting with fellow Conservancy supporters and staff. \nA special discounted rate of $30 is available to members\, however\, non-members are welcome to join for $60 and learn about the benefits of being part of the Catalina Island Conservancy and its community of Island supporters. \nWhat to Know \nMeet at the Trailhead Visitor Center in Avalon at 8 a.m.  Conservancy vehicles will depart for Blackjack Campground drop-off at 8:15 a.m. \nLunch will be provided at Haypress Reservoir at the conclusion of the hike. \nHikers will be transported back to the Trailhead by 2:30 p.m. \nIf you plan to depart Long Beach for same day travel\, book a ticket on the 6 a.m. ferry. DESCRIPTION:Native plants support a healthy Island ecosystem and wildfire resilience. Help with sowing seeds\, up-potting plants and gardening fun at the Ackerman Native Plant Nursery. You’ll help the nursery care for more than 85 native species for island restoration work. Music and light snacks will be provided to keep the energy going.   \nThis volunteer opportunity occurs every Thursday.
