DESCRIPTION:Register Today!		\n \nBring your binoculars for this special birding eco tour into Catalina’s wildlands. Discover the Island’s remarkable bird population of 318 recorded species alongside an experienced guide as you explore parts of the Island that many people never get to see. \nLaura Vandezande\, a longtime birder\, will guide us on this 4-hour excursion that involves open-air vehicle travel through Catalina’s wildlands with dedicated time outside the vehicle at key birding locations. Depending on the season and current bird activity\, the route may include Middle Ranch Reservoir\, Thompson Reservoir\, Little Harbor and other locations. \nAlong the way\, guests may encounter Catalina California quail\, acorn woodpeckers\, spotted towhees\, Bewick’s wrens\, bald eagles\, ruddy ducks\, overwintering ducks and seasonal visitors\, such as snowy plovers. More than 68 species are known to breed on this Island and new discoveries are not unusual. This experience is designed for curious newcomers and experienced birders alike. Every tour will be a little different: the birds help set our itinerary. \n \nWhat to Bring \n\nBinoculars\nA reusable water bottle\nLayered clothing\, as temperatures may vary throughout the day\nComfortable shoes \nA snack\n\nImportant to Know \nBecome a member today to access the discounted eco-tour rate. *This experience does not qualify as the free eco tour for Islander memberships. \nWe will meet at the Trailhead Visitor Center for departure and will return to the Trailhead at the end of the excursion. \nFerry tickets are not included in the cost of this workshop and should be purchased early to ensure a seat is available. Same day ferry riders from Long Beach should reserve the 6 a.m. Catalina Express boat. \nParticipants should come prepared for being outside in the field\, standing and walking. Sturdy\, close-toed shoes and a re-fillable water bottle are required. Some walking on uneven terrain should be expected. \nTour can go over by 30 minutes depending on bird visibility and weather conditions.

Education staff will guide you through a course-work book while exploring the landscape and ecosystem of Catalina. \nThe Naturalist 2 Training field excursion runs from 8:30am-3:30pm and begins and ends at the Conservancy’s Trailhead Visitor Center. \nCourse workbook is included in the course fee. Boat fare on the Catalina Express is not included. Participants should make those reservations as soon as possible if they do not live on the Island. Lunch at the Restaurant at the Airport in the Sky is not included and participants need to bring or buy their own lunch. \nParticipants need to come prepared for a full day outside in the field\, standing and walking. Sturdy\, close-toed shoes\, sun protection\, and a re-fillable water bottle are required. Some walking on uneven terrain should be expected.

DESCRIPTION:Register Today!		\n \nBring your binoculars for this special birding eco tour into Catalina’s wildlands. Discover the Island’s remarkable bird population of 318 recorded species alongside an experienced guide as you explore parts of the Island that many people never get to see. \nLaura Vandezande\, a longtime birder\, will guide us on this 4-hour excursion that involves open-air vehicle travel through Catalina’s wildlands with dedicated time outside the vehicle at key birding locations. Depending on the season and current bird activity\, the route may include Middle Ranch Reservoir\, Thompson Reservoir\, Little Harbor and other locations. \nAlong the way\, guests may encounter Catalina California quail\, acorn woodpeckers\, spotted towhees\, Bewick’s wrens\, bald eagles\, ruddy ducks\, overwintering ducks and seasonal visitors\, such as snowy plovers. More than 68 species are known to breed on this Island and new discoveries are not unusual. This experience is designed for curious newcomers and experienced birders alike. SUMMARY:Audubon Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Register Today!		\n \nJoin Conservancy staff and other naturalists to count and record different species of birds during a day trip into the wildlands of Catalina Island.  \nThe Christmas Bird Count is a long-standing program of the National Audubon Society\, where thousands of volunteers across the U.S.\, Canada and other countries in the Western Hemisphere go birding over a 24-hour period to contribute to an early-winter bird census. The data for these bird counts have long been used in hundreds of analyses\, peer-reviewed publications and government reports. Watch the video from last year to get an understanding of what this event entails.  \nEvent Details \nThis event begins with transportation from the Trailhead Visitor Center at 6:30 a.m. Participants will be split into groups to cover parts of Catalina that fall within the official designated birding circle. The shuttle will return to Avalon at 1 p.m. for lunch provided by the Conservancy and discussion on birds seen throughout the day. \nDay of boats do not depart earlier enough to participate in this excursion\, so off-Island participants should consider staying over the night before. Ferry tickets and accommodations are the responsibility of individuals. \nThings to Consider \nParticipants need to come prepared for a full day outside in the field\, standing and walking. Sturdy\, close-toed shoes\, sun protection\, and a re-fillable water bottle are recommended. Walking on uneven terrain should be expected. Some binoculars will be available\, but bring your own binoculars and a notebook\, if possible. \n\nNo experience is necessary to participate. We’ll provide field guides and training to help you learn how to collect and record data. A limited number of binoculars will also be available for participants who need them.
