SUMMARY:Naturalist 2 Training January 23
DESCRIPTION:Register		\n \nThis 7-hour excursion into the wildlands of Catalina Island expands on the concepts covered in Naturalist 1 Training. Education staff will guide you through a course-work book while exploring the landscape and ecosystem of Catalina. \nThe Naturalist 2 Training field excursion runs from 8:30am-3:30pm and begins and ends at the Conservancy’s Trailhead visitor center\, 708 Crescent Avenue. \nCourse workbook is included in the course fee. Boat fare on the Catalina Express is not included. Participants should make those reservations as soon as possible if they do not live on the Island. Lunch at the Restaurant at the Airport in the Sky is not included and participants need to bring or buy their own lunch. \nParticipants need to come prepared for a full day outside in the field\, standing and walking. Sturdy\, close-toed shoes\, sun protection\, and a re-fillable water bottle are required. Some walking on uneven terrain should be expected.

Each month\, we’ll explore a new theme and engage in hands-on activities that celebrate the natural wonders of Catalina. This month’s focus is on the island’s native and endemic birds\, perfect for young nature enthusiasts eager to learn and create. \nDive into Catalina’s bird life through a hands-on native bird talk\, where students will learn about local bird species\, their habitats\, and unique adaptations. Following the lesson\, participants will dive into two creative activities: crafting a bird feeder to take home for birdwatching and designing their own bird models inspired by the species they’ve learned about. \nAdditional Details: \n\nLocation: The Trailhead\nTransportation: Shuttle from and back to Avalon School available\, or parents can drop off students at The Trailhead by 3:00 PM and pick back up by 4:00 PM.\nSnacks: Provided for all participants.\nCost: Free for all participants.\n\nStudents must have a signed permission slip to participate. He has focused on avian ecology and habitat restoration.  Mike monitors ashy and Leach’s storm-petrels\, Scripps’s and Guadalupe murrelets\, and California brown pelicans while overseeing habitat restoration work on six of the California Channel Islands. He has also assisted Japanese seabird biologists on the study of Japanese crested murrelets for the past 7 years.
