SUMMARY:Audubon Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Register Today!		\n \nJoin Conservancy staff and other Naturalists to count and record as many birds\, and species of birds as possible to contribute to the Audubon Christmas Bird Count during a trip into the wildlands of Catalina Island. \nThe Christmas Bird Count is a long-standing program of the National Audubon Society where thousands of volunteers across the US\, Canada\, and other countries in the Western Hemisphere\, go birding over a 24-hour period to contribute to an early-winter bird census. The data for these bird counts have been used in hundreds of analyses\, peer-reviewed publications\, and government reports over the decades. \nThis event begins at the Trailhead visitor center at 6:30am and participants will be split into groups to cover as much of Catalina that falls in the official designated birding circle as we can! Groups will arrive back in Avalon at 1:00pm for a Conservancy provided lunch and discussion on birds seen throughout the day. \nParticipants need to come prepared for a full day outside in the field\, standing and walking. Sturdy\, close-toed shoes\, sun protection\, and a re-fillable water bottle are required. Bring binoculars and a notebook if you can! Some walking on uneven terrain should be expected. Lunch\, extra binoculars\, and water refills will be provided.

DESCRIPTION:Click to Register		\n \nDiscussion: Online – November 20th 5:30-6:30pm \nNovember Book selection: As Long as Grass Grows: The Indigenous Fight for Environmental Justice from Colonization to Standing Rock by Dina Gilio-Whitaker \nThe story of Native peoples’ resistance to environmental injustice and land incursions\, and a call for environmentalists to learn from the Indigenous community’s rich history of activism \nThrough the unique lens of “Indigenized environmental justice\,” Indigenous researcher and activist Dina Gilio-Whitaker explores the fraught history of treaty violations\, struggles for food and water security\, and protection of sacred sites\, while highlighting the important leadership of Indigenous women in this centuries-long struggle. As Long As Grass Grows gives readers an accessible history of Indigenous resistance to government and corporate incursions on their lands and offers new approaches to environmental justice activism and policy. \nThroughout 2016\, the Standing Rock protest put a national spotlight on Indigenous activists\, but it also underscored how little Americans know about the longtime historical tensions between Native peoples and the mainstream environmental movement. Ultimately\, she argues\, modern environmentalists must look to the history of Indigenous resistance for wisdom and inspiration in our common fight for a just and sustainable future.

Learn about the challenges these animals face\, the science behind their care\, and how MMCC is making a difference in ocean conservation. \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker\n \nDavid Bader \nDavid Bader is the Chief of Operations and Education at the Marine Mammal Care Center in San Pedro\, CA. With over two decades of experience in informal science education\, David has been a key figure in developing and managing educational programs since beginning his career in 1998. He has created a variety of capacity-building opportunities for staff\, university researchers\, agency scientists\, and informal educators across the Los Angeles area. David holds a bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology from the University of California\, Santa Cruz\, and a master’s degree in Biology\, with a focus on educational media design\, from the University of California\, Irvine.

Education staff will guide you through a course-work book while exploring the landscape and ecosystem of Catalina. \nThe Naturalist 2 Training field excursion runs from 8:30am-3:30pm and begins and ends at the Conservancy’s Trailhead visitor center\, 708 Crescent Avenue. \nCourse workbook is included in the course fee. Boat fare on the Catalina Express is not included. Participants should make those reservations as soon as possible if they do not live on the Island. Lunch at the Restaurant at the Airport in the Sky is not included and participants need to bring or buy their own lunch. \nParticipants need to come prepared for a full day outside in the field\, standing and walking. Sturdy\, close-toed shoes\, sun protection\, and a re-fillable water bottle are required. Some walking on uneven terrain should be expected.

SUMMARY:Last Friday Lecture Series - Understanding California's White Sharks with Dr. Chris Lowe
DESCRIPTION:This event will be in-person at the Trailhead Visitor Center and streamed live online. \n		\n			Register		\n \nUnderstanding California’s White Sharks: Research\, Safety\, and Coexistence\n\n\n\n\n\nWith the white shark population increasing due to successful conservation and management\, increased shark activity along the CA coastline has raised public safety concerns. The CSULB Shark Lab has been studying white sharks for almost 20 years and in 2018 formed the CA Shark Beach Safety Program with funding from the California State legislature. New research has focused on population dynamics and behavior\, particularly for juveniles that use coastal beach habitats as nursery. Research findings are dispersed to stakeholders (e.g.\, lifeguards\, Harbor patrol\, general public\, K-12 schools) via large education and outreach program. Come learn about what we’ve discovered and how we’re learning how to live with white sharks off California. \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker\n \nDr. Chris Lowe \nAs Director of the Shark Lab at California State University\, Dr. Lowe has been studying sharks\, rays and bony fishes for over 30 years\, focusing on their behavior\, physiology and ecology. For the last 15 years\, Dr. Lowe and his students have been studying juvenile white sharks off the coast of southern California. Using a wide array of technology\, they have found that white sharks use southern California beaches seasonally as nursery habitat for their young. This brings juvenile white sharks in close proximity to beach goers. Dr. Lowe and his student use a wide array of technologies and educators to help lifeguards and the public understand the mysterious lives of sharks and just how much of a threat they may actually pose.

By highlighting the Aquarium of the Pacific’s role in conservation-based aquaculture and outplanting efforts\, as well as the unique successes and challenges in Southern California\, we aim to inspire greater engagement in abalone recovery and marine stewardship through our collaborative efforts with conservation partners. \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker\n \nJohnathan Casey \nJohnathan Casey is the Curator of Fish and Invertebrates at the Aquarium of the Pacific\, overseeing the tropical and temperate water exhibits and conservation projects. With a lifelong passion for marine life\, he brings nearly two decades of experience in aquarium management and conservation aquaculture. His expertise includes exhibit design\, animal care\, scientific diving\, and underwater photography. Prior to joining the Aquarium\, Johnathan held research leadership roles at multiple academic institutions in Hawaii\, where he resided for ten years. He is dedicated to creating immersive and authentic exhibits while advancing our understanding of marine ecosystems through research\, outreach\, and conservation efforts.

Education staff will guide you through a course-work book while exploring the landscape and ecosystem of Catalina. \nThe Naturalist 2 Training field excursion runs from 8:30am-3:30pm and begins and ends at the Conservancy’s Trailhead visitor center\, 708 Crescent Avenue. \nCourse workbook is included in the course fee. Boat fare on the Catalina Express is not included. Participants should make those reservations as soon as possible if they do not live on the Island. Lunch at the Restaurant at the Airport in the Sky is not included and participants need to bring or buy their own lunch. \nParticipants need to come prepared for a full day outside in the field\, standing and walking. Sturdy\, close-toed shoes\, sun protection\, and a re-fillable water bottle are required. Some walking on uneven terrain should be expected.

The videos that you watch before attending the webinar provide an overview of the natural and cultural history of Catalina and then highlights the work that the Catalina Island Conservancy does to manage the 88% of the Island that it owns.
