Enroll in the Environmental Stewards Catalina Island California Naturalist Course through University of California and explore one of Southern California’s most unique and biodiverse landscapes. This 9-week hybrid program blends online learning with a 3-day immersive field school on Catalina Island\, where participants will experience Island ecology up close. \nExpert lectures\, guided field explorations and place-based learning will empower participants to gain knowledge on Catalina’s endemic species\, restoration efforts and coastal Mediterranean ecosystems. Discover how island systems function as living laboratories for conservation while gaining the knowledge and tools to engage meaningfully in natural resource stewardship. \nTo participate\, your application must be accepted. Interested participants must complete the short application link to be considered. A limited number of 50% tuition scholarships are available to accepted participants. The deadline to submit application is Friday\, August 28th at 11:59pm. DESCRIPTION:Register Today!		\n \nJoin us for a free walk guided by Conservancy naturalists to learn about native and exotic plants. \nThis activity reoccurs the last Wednesday of every month (note that the August hike is on a Thursday). Meet at the Trailhead Visitor Center for a free shuttle ride at 9:15 a.m. to the Wrigley Memorial & Botanic Gardens. Be sure to select a shuttle ticket when checking out. \nThe garden exploration portion of the tour takes place 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. with an optional hike from 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. \nParticipants receive free entry to the garden. \nAbout the Tour and Hike:\nPlease dress in layers\, bring water and wear sun protection. We will begin with a leisurely\, guided walk through the garden. Participants who wish to continue are then invited to join a 2.9-mile hike with a 725-foot elevation gain. At the summit\, you will be rewarded with stunning panoramic views\, opportunities to observe diverse wildlife\, and a peaceful natural setting. Please note that the hike includes limited shade and several steep sections. Reviewers recommend starting early and wearing sturdy\, supportive footwear. SUMMARY:Eco Tour: Birding Catalina's Wildlands
DESCRIPTION:Register Today!		\n \nBring your binoculars for this special birding eco tour into Catalina’s wildlands. Discover the Island’s remarkable bird population of 318 recorded species alongside an experienced guide as you explore parts of the Island that many people never get to see. \nLaura Vandezande\, a longtime birder\, will guide us on this 4-hour excursion that involves open-air vehicle travel through Catalina’s wildlands with dedicated time outside the vehicle at key birding locations. Depending on the season and current bird activity\, the route may include Middle Ranch Reservoir\, Thompson Reservoir\, Little Harbor and other locations. \nAlong the way\, guests may encounter Catalina California quail\, acorn woodpeckers\, spotted towhees\, Bewick’s wrens\, bald eagles\, ruddy ducks\, overwintering ducks and seasonal visitors\, such as snowy plovers. More than 68 species are known to breed on this Island and new discoveries are not unusual. This experience is designed for curious newcomers and experienced birders alike. Every tour will be a little different: the birds help set our itinerary. \n \nWhat to Bring \n\nBinoculars\nA reusable water bottle\nLayered clothing\, as temperatures may vary throughout the day\nComfortable shoes \nA snack\n\nImportant to Know \nBecome a member today to access the discounted eco-tour rate. *This experience does not qualify as the free eco tour for Islander memberships. \nWe will meet at the Trailhead Visitor Center for departure and will return to the Trailhead at the end of the excursion. \nFerry tickets are not included in the cost of this workshop and should be purchased early to ensure a seat is available. Same day ferry riders from Long Beach should reserve the 6 a.m. Catalina Express boat. \nParticipants should come prepared for being outside in the field\, standing and walking. Sturdy\, close-toed shoes and a re-fillable water bottle are required. Some walking on uneven terrain should be expected. \nTour can go over by 30 minutes depending on bird visibility and weather conditions.

DESCRIPTION:Register Today!		\n \nThis 7-hour excursion into the wildlands of Catalina Island expands on the concepts covered in Naturalist 1 Training. Education staff will guide you through a course-work book while exploring the landscape and ecosystem of Catalina. \nThe Naturalist 2 Training field excursion runs from 8:30am-3:30pm and begins and ends at the Conservancy’s Trailhead Visitor Center. \nCourse workbook is included in the course fee. Boat fare on the Catalina Express is not included. Participants should make those reservations as soon as possible if they do not live on the Island. Lunch at the Restaurant at the Airport in the Sky is not included and participants need to bring or buy their own lunch. \nParticipants need to come prepared for a full day outside in the field\, standing and walking. Sturdy\, close-toed shoes\, sun protection\, and a re-fillable water bottle are required. Some walking on uneven terrain should be expected.

DESCRIPTION:Register Today!		\n \nJoin us for our free monthly after-school series on Monday\, October 26\, 2026\, from 2:15 p.m. to 4 p.m.  \nEach month\, we’ll explore a new theme and engage in hands-on activities that celebrate the natural wonders of Catalina. This month’s focus is Catalina Island fox! We will learn about the Conservancy’s annual fox monitoring program and practice wildlife biologist skills in rotating stations. Snacks are included. \nAdditional Details: \n\nLocation: Trailhead Visitor Center\nTransportation: All Avalon School participants will be picked up from the lower turnaround at school and shuttled to the Trailhead by Conservancy staff. Please choose your pick-up option when registering (parent pick-up at the Trailhead at 4 p.m.\, shuttle back to school\, or allowed to walk home from the Trailhead).\nCost: Free for all participants.\nSnacks provided for all participants.\n\nStudents must have a signed permission slip to participate. Permission slips will be distributed in classrooms and are due by Friday October 23\, 2026. For those who register online\, an email will be sent to electronically fill out the permission slip. DESCRIPTION:Register Today!		\n \nJoin us for a free walk guided by Conservancy naturalists to learn about native and exotic plants. \nThis activity reoccurs the last Wednesday of every month. Meet at the Trailhead Visitor Center for a free shuttle ride at 9:15 a.m. to the Wrigley Memorial & Botanic Gardens. Be sure to select a shuttle ticket when checking out. \nThe garden exploration portion of the tour takes place 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. with an optional hike from 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. \nParticipants receive free entry to the garden. \nAbout the Tour and Hike:\nPlease dress in layers\, bring water and wear sun protection. We will begin with a leisurely\, guided walk through the garden. Participants who wish to continue are then invited to join a 2.9-mile hike with a 725-foot elevation gain. At the summit\, you will be rewarded with stunning panoramic views\, opportunities to observe diverse wildlife\, and a peaceful natural setting. Please note that the hike includes limited shade and several steep sections. Reviewers recommend starting early and wearing sturdy\, supportive footwear. Hike Details Length: 2.9 miles Elevation gain: 725 feet.
