She will guide us along an immersive color walk through Wrigley Memorial Botanic Garden. The natural palette of colors found here within the earth and sky have inspired Catalina’s artists and architects for over a century.  \nGuided by Conservancy naturalists\, participants will journey through six stops. We will discover the Island’s iconic colors through the eyes of artists who documented the natural world through observation and paint\, long before photography. At each stop\, participants will slow down\, closely observe their surroundings and mix paint to capture Catalina’s native landscape in a personal nature journal.  \nStanley will demonstrate her signature alla prima oil painting technique that uses bold\, direct brushwork built on deep observation. Learn to read color in light and shadow\, understand complementary relationships\, and blend color palettes that define Catalina’s visual identity. Conservancy naturalists will explain the ecological and cultural history behind each plant and its colors\, tracing the thread from native species to the art and architecture that represents Catalina.  \nWhat to Bring \n\nA reusable water bottle\nSunscreen\nLayered clothing\, as temperatures may vary throughout the day\n\nImportant to Know \nMeet at the Trailhead Visitor Center for a free shuttle to the garden. Our guide is Dr. Paul D. Asimow\, Eleanor and John R. McMillan Professor of Geology and Geochemistry at Caltech.   \nWe will travel into Catalina’s interior to better understand the Island through the eyes of a world-renowned geologist. Along the way\, Asimow will reveal how Catalina’s unique rock formations\, tectonic history and dynamic geologic processes have shaped the features we see today. Participants will explore Catalina’s diverse native plant communities\, moving through chaparral\, coastal sage scrub and oak woodland habitats alongside one of California’s foremost island botanists.   \nDrawing on nearly five decades of field research across the Channel Islands\, Junak will guide the group across the landscape. Along the way\, he will share insights into the plants that define each community and the changes he has witnessed over a career of close observation. A central focus of the excursion will be the growing influence of climate change on island bloom cycles. We will learn about the impacts of shifting temperatures\, altered rainfall patterns\, and prolonged drought on Catalina’s native plants.
