SUMMARY:Catalina Island Cyanotype Workshop with Oriana Poindexter
DESCRIPTION:Register Today! \n \nJoin photographer and marine scientist Oriana Poindexter at the Catalina Museum for Art & History for an interactive cyanotype workshop inspired by Catalina Island’s marine and terrestrial landscapes.  \nWe will begin with a guided walkthrough of The Blue Forest\, Oriana’s immersive installation that transports visitors into the underwater world of Catalina Island’s kelp forests. Through the exhibit\, guests will explore the intersection of art\, ecology\, photography and marine science that informs her cyanotype work.  \nFollowing the exhibit tour\, guests will learn the fundamentals of cyanotype\, one of the earliest photographic processes developed in the 1840s. Using sunlight\, water and specially treated materials\, participants will create original cyanotype works in this art form’s signature deep Prussian blue tones.  \nWorking with giant kelp\, seaweeds\, Catalina native plants and other natural textures\, participants will experiment with composition and exposure techniques on both paper and fabric\, including silk scarves. Participants are also encouraged to bring small personal objects or dried botanicals to incorporate into their artwork.  \nAll experience levels are welcome to this hands-on workshop\, which includes all materials and instruction. Participants will leave with original cyanotype creations and a deeper appreciation for the connections between art\, science and Catalina’s natural environment.  \n \n\n  \n \nImportant to Know \nMeet at the Catalina Museum for Art & History. \nFerry tickets are not included in the cost of this workshop and should be purchased early to ensure a seat is available. Same day ferry riders from Long Beach should reserve the 6 a.m. or 9:50 a.m. Catalina Express boat.
