SUMMARY:Audubon Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Register Today! \n \nJoin Conservancy staff and other naturalists to count and record different species of birds during a day trip into the wildlands of Catalina Island.  \nThe Christmas Bird Count is a long-standing program of the National Audubon Society\, where thousands of volunteers across the U.S.\, Canada and other countries in the Western Hemisphere go birding over a 24-hour period to contribute to an early-winter bird census. The data for these bird counts have long been used in hundreds of analyses\, peer-reviewed publications and government reports. \nEvent Details \nThis event begins with transportation from the Trailhead Visitor Center at 6:30 a.m. Participants will be split into groups to cover parts of Catalina that fall within the official designated birding circle. The shuttle will return to Avalon at 1 p.m. for lunch provided by the Conservancy and discussion on birds seen throughout the day. \nThings to Consider \nParticipants need to come prepared for a full day outside in the field\, standing and walking. Sturdy\, close-toed shoes\, sun protection\, and a re-fillable water bottle are recommended. Walking on uneven terrain should be expected. Some binoculars will be available\, but bring your own binoculars and a notebook\, if possible.

SUMMARY:Science Pub: Coastal Corridors - Movement and Migration by Land and Sea
DESCRIPTION:Register Today! \n \nEngage in thoughtful discussion about important scientific issues while socializing in a laid back atmosphere. Catalina Island Conservancy’s Science Pub is a free community event that offers an approachable way to learn about topics related to the natural world. \nThis January event explores migration as one of nature’s most remarkable processes. Experts will share their insights on how birds and whales move across vast landscapes and seascapes\, and why these journeys matter. \nThe program features two presentations. Melissa Borde\, environmental scientist and reserve manager for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife\, will examine shorebird migration along the Pacific Flyway\, highlighting the essential role of Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve and the connections between Southern California wetlands and Catalina Island. Alisa Schulman-Janiger\, a cetacean researcher and educator\, will share decades of observations on gray whale migration through the San Pedro Channel\, emphasizing the ecological importance of this corridor between the mainland and Catalina Island. Unlike formal presentations\, science pubs prioritize conversation and connection. Short presentations are followed by time for questions and discussion\, creating space for curiosity\, exchange and shared learning. Attendees are encouraged to relax\, engage and enjoy an evening of science and community. \nWhat to Expect \n\nTwo short\, engaging talks on whale and bird migration\nInsights into current research and conservation efforts\nA relaxed\, social atmosphere\nTime for questions and discussion\n\nWhether you’re a science enthusiast\, nature lover or simply curious about the incredible journeys happening all around us\, this Science Pub Lecture offers a fascinating night of learning and connection. All are welcome. Grab a drink\, bring your curiosity\, and join us for an evening of science made approachable. \nImportant to Know \nTravel to and from the Island is not included and must be reserved in advance.
