Participants should make those reservations as soon as possible if they do not live on the Island. Lunch at the Restaurant at the Airport in the Sky is not included and participants need to bring or buy their own lunch. \nParticipants need to come prepared for a full day outside in the field\, standing and walking. DESCRIPTION:Register Today!		\n \n  \nJoin Oriana Poindexter and the Catalina Island Conservancy for an interactive cyanotype workshop. Learn this early alternative photographic process and use organic materials to create your own cyanotype prints using photochemistry techniques first developed in the 1840s.  \nCyanotype is an alternative photographic process used to create photographic prints in the distinctive shade of Prussian blue and white without the use of a camera\, exposed with the sun and developed in water. This workshop will teach you the fundamentals of the cyanotype process and its history\, culminating with each participant creating three original cyanotype prints.  \nThe resulting prints will serve as records of the state of the ocean and your creative process on that particular day\, recorded in the blue and white palette of the sea itself.   \nIf you have materials you’d like to bring to use for printing (sentimental objects\, dried botanicals\, etc)\, please feel free to bring them.  \nRegistration fee includes all materials and instruction\, as well as light refreshments and seaweed snacks. Complete registration to reserve a spot – space is limited. All ages are welcome. Children below the age of 16 must be accompanied by a ticketed parent or guardian.  \nNot included: Travel to the island. If coming from the mainland\, book your ferry to Avalon through the Catalina Flyer (Newport Beach) or the Catalina Express (Dana Point\, Long Beach\, San Pedro). SUMMARY:CANCELED: Catalina Bat Night: Lecture and Field Excursion
DESCRIPTION:Please note: this event has been canceled.\nWhen the sun goes down\, winged Catalina creatures fly into the night. After a presentation on bats\, we’ll suit up with night vision goggles and ultrasonic bat detectors to find them. \nJoin UCLA bat researchers Joseph Curti and Jill Carpenter for an evening exploring Catalina’s bat ecology. We’ll begin with a short indoor presentation covering the ecology of Catalina bats and an overview of the current research being conducted to better understand local bat populations. After sunset\, we’ll travel into the Island’s interior to search for bats using scientific tools to detect them as they emerge to feed. \nDeparture and Return Details  \nThis event begins at 5 p.m. at the Trailhead Visitor Center in Avalon\, where our guest speakers will speak for one hour about Catalina’s bats and current research. For the second part of the event\, we will head into the interior to try to spot bats around 6 p.m. Watch our video about their recent research on Catalina Island for a teaser of this event. \nIf you’re traveling from the mainland\, please note that Catalina Express boat fare is not included. Reservations should be made as early as possible to secure your spot. \nWe’ll return to the Trailhead around 8 p.m. \nWhat to Bring  \nWear layered clothing\, long pants\, and sturdy hiking shoes suitable for rugged terrain. Participants may also bring headlights and a water bottle if desired.

SUMMARY:Audubon Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Register Today!		\n \nJoin Conservancy staff and other naturalists to count and record different species of birds during a day trip into the wildlands of Catalina Island.  \nThe Christmas Bird Count is a long-standing program of the National Audubon Society\, where thousands of volunteers across the U.S.\, Canada and other countries in the Western Hemisphere go birding over a 24-hour period to contribute to an early-winter bird census. The data for these bird counts have long been used in hundreds of analyses\, peer-reviewed publications and government reports. \nEvent Details \nThis event begins with transportation from the Trailhead Visitor Center at 6:30 a.m. Participants will be split into groups to cover parts of Catalina that fall within the official designated birding circle. The shuttle will return to Avalon at 1 p.m. for lunch provided by the Conservancy and discussion on birds seen throughout the day. \nThings to Consider \nParticipants need to come prepared for a full day outside in the field\, standing and walking. Sturdy\, close-toed shoes\, sun protection\, and a re-fillable water bottle are recommended. Walking on uneven terrain should be expected. Some binoculars will be available\, but bring your own binoculars and a notebook\, if possible.
