Check our events calendar for other exciting opportunities. \nDeepen your understanding on conservation recovery strategies while learning about the remarkable success story of the American bald eagle on Catalina Island. Accompanied by Conservancy naturalists and special guest Erin Weiner\, Eagle Project Lead for the Institute for Wildlife Studies (IWS)\, participants will journey into Catalina’s wildlands in search of bald eagles while visiting several of the Island’s known nesting territories.  \nThroughout the day\, we’ll travel to prime eagle habitat\, stopping at nesting sites to learn how biologists monitor nesting pairs and support the continued recovery of this iconic species. Along the way\, we will keep our eyes on the skies as we search for adult and juvenile bald eagles.  \nAs the eagle biologist for the Channel Islands\, Weiner continues the Bald Eagle Restoration Project’s 45-year legacy of science-based conservation. Throughout the excursion\, she’ll share the history of bald eagle restoration\, discuss current monitoring and research efforts\, explain nesting behaviors and ecology\, and provide an inside look at the ongoing work to ensure these magnificent birds continue to thrive on the Channel Islands.  \nSpace is limited. Advance registration is required.  \nWhat to Bring \n\nA reusable water bottle\nLayered clothing\, as temperatures may vary throughout the day\nA packed lunch \nComfortable hiking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing \nOptional: Binoculars for wildlife viewing. DESCRIPTION:Register Today!		\n \nJoin us for a free walk guided by Conservancy naturalists to learn about native and exotic plants. \nThis activity reoccurs the last Wednesday of every month (note that the August hike is on a Thursday). Meet at the Trailhead Visitor Center for a free shuttle ride at 9:15 a.m. to the Wrigley Memorial & Botanic Gardens. Be sure to select a shuttle ticket when checking out. \nThe garden exploration portion of the tour takes place 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. with an optional hike from 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. \nParticipants receive free entry to the garden. \nAbout the Tour and Hike:\nPlease dress in layers\, bring water and wear sun protection. We will begin with a leisurely\, guided walk through the garden. Participants who wish to continue are then invited to join a 2.9-mile hike with a 725-foot elevation gain. At the summit\, you will be rewarded with stunning panoramic views\, opportunities to observe diverse wildlife\, and a peaceful natural setting. Please note that the hike includes limited shade and several steep sections. Reviewers recommend starting early and wearing sturdy\, supportive footwear. Enroll in the Environmental Stewards Catalina Island California Naturalist Course through University of California and explore one of Southern California’s most unique and biodiverse landscapes. This 9-week hybrid program blends online learning with a 3-day immersive field school on Catalina Island\, where participants will experience Island ecology up close. \nExpert lectures\, guided field explorations and place-based learning will empower participants to gain knowledge on Catalina’s endemic species\, restoration efforts and coastal Mediterranean ecosystems. Discover how island systems function as living laboratories for conservation while gaining the knowledge and tools to engage meaningfully in natural resource stewardship. \nTo participate\, your application must be accepted. Interested participants must complete the short application link to be considered. DESCRIPTION:Register Today!		\n \nHistory\, cultural memory and the natural world come together during this Speaker Series with Los Angeles-based artist and researcher Sandy Rodriguez. Using hand-processed pigments made from native plants and earth-based materials\, guided by colonial-era recipes\, Rodriguez explores histories of resistance across the Americas. \nThis Chicana artist will discuss her ongoing series\, Codex Rodriguez-Mondragón\, which is currently on view at Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Huntington Museum\, among others. Her rigorous process requires intensive\, independent field research that merges materials\, local and colonial histories\, and contemporary news cycles. Rodriguez makes visible the complex and unfolding narratives of the Americas through expression that is both artistic and scholarly. \nA critical voice in contemporary American art\, her work has been recognized with prestigious honors such as the Jacob Lawrence Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters\, alongside numerous museum commissions and fellowships. While we enjoy snacks\, we will get to know each other for the new school year.  \nAdditional Details: \n\nLocation: Trailhead Visitor Center\nTransportation: All Avalon School participants will be picked up from the lower turnaround at school and shuttled to the Trailhead by Conservancy staff. Please choose your pick-up option when registering (parent pick-up at the Trailhead at 4 p.m.\, shuttle back to school\, or allowed to walk home from the Trailhead).\nCost: Free for all participants.\nSnacks provided for all participants.\n\nStudents must have a signed permission slip to participate. Permission slips will be distributed in classrooms and are due by Friday September 25\, 2026. Participants should make those reservations as soon as possible if they do not live on the Island. Lunch at the Restaurant at the Airport in the Sky is not included and participants need to bring or buy their own lunch. \nParticipants need to come prepared for a full day outside in the field\, standing and walking. SUMMARY:Audubon Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Register Today!		\n \nJoin Conservancy staff and other naturalists to count and record different species of birds during a day trip into the wildlands of Catalina Island.  \nThe Christmas Bird Count is a long-standing program of the National Audubon Society\, where thousands of volunteers across the U.S.\, Canada and other countries in the Western Hemisphere go birding over a 24-hour period to contribute to an early-winter bird census. The data for these bird counts have long been used in hundreds of analyses\, peer-reviewed publications and government reports. Watch the video from last year to get an understanding of what this event entails.  \nEvent Details \nThis event begins with transportation from the Trailhead Visitor Center at 6:30 a.m. Participants will be split into groups to cover parts of Catalina that fall within the official designated birding circle. The shuttle will return to Avalon at 1 p.m. for lunch provided by the Conservancy and discussion on birds seen throughout the day. \nDay of boats do not depart earlier enough to participate in this excursion\, so off-Island participants should consider staying over the night before. Ferry tickets and accommodations are the responsibility of individuals. \nThings to Consider \nParticipants need to come prepared for a full day outside in the field\, standing and walking. Sturdy\, close-toed shoes\, sun protection\, and a re-fillable water bottle are recommended. Walking on uneven terrain should be expected. Some binoculars will be available\, but bring your own binoculars and a notebook\, if possible. \n\nNo experience is necessary to participate. We’ll provide field guides and training to help you learn how to collect and record data. A limited number of binoculars will also be available for participants who need them.
