DESCRIPTION:Register Today!		\n \nBe part of a statewide effort to find\, record\, and share observations of animals\, seaweeds\, and plants along the California coastline. Register for our bioblitz event on Saturday\, June 29th\, and join Conservancy staff on an excursion into the interior of Catalina Island. Together\, we’ll explore and photograph as many species as we can find along Catalina’s coast. \nYour observations will become a part of a large dataset that helps researchers track the distribution and seasonal changes of species overtime. To learn more about Snapshot Cal Coast\, visit their website here. Anyone can participate in this bioblitz throughout the entire month of June by recording coastal observations on iNaturalist. \nRegistration for this event is free. Participants will meet at the Trailhead visitor center at 10am on Saturday\, June 29th\, where we will head out to Little Harbor and Shark Harbor on the windward side of Catalina. We will return to the Trailhead at 2pm. \nParticipants should expect to spend the excursion walking. Lunch is not included\, so please pack your own snacks and lunch. SUMMARY:Last Friday Lecture Series - Saving Giant Sea Bass with Andrew Pettit
DESCRIPTION:This event will be in-person at the Trailhead Visitor Center and streamed live online. \n		\n			Register		\n \nUtilizing Community Science and Machine Learning to Save the King of the Kelp Forest\nThe giant sea bass (Stereolepis gigas) is the largest bony fish along the California coast and a crucial apex predator in kelp forests and rocky reefs. Due to their slow growth and predictable aggregations\, they were nearly fished to extinction throughout their entire range from Humboldt Bay to Baja California\, Mexico. Now critically endangered and protected by a California fishing moratorium\, their population is believed to be recovering\, though no direct assessment has been made. The Spotting Giant Sea Bass project uses community-sourced photos and machine learning to identify individual fish by their unique spot patterns. Mark-recapture models show promising signs of recovery\, highlighting the importance of ongoing conservation efforts. This talk will dive into the fascinating recovery journey of the giant sea bass\, the innovative techniques used by Spotting Giant Sea Bass to monitor them\, and the critical role of community involvement in conservation. \nSpeaker\n \nAndrew Pettit \nAndrew Pettit is a project scientist and graduate student with the Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory at the UCSB Marine Science Institute. He leads the Spotting Giant Sea Bass Project\, seeking to answer important questions regarding the population\, spatial patterns\, and ecology of the giant sea bass. He is an avid diver and has worked as an AAUS scientific diver at UC Santa Barbara since 2020\, conducting research along the California coast and Northern Channel Islands.

SUMMARY:Naturalist 2 Training June 15
DESCRIPTION:Register		\n \nThis 7-hour excursion into the wildlands of Catalina Island expands on the concepts covered in Naturalist 1 Training. Education staff will guide you through a course-work book while exploring the landscape and ecosystem of Catalina. \nThe Naturalist 2 Training field excursion runs from 8:30am-3:30pm and begins and ends at the Conservancy’s Trailhead visitor center\, 708 Crescent Avenue. \nCourse workbook is included in the course fee. Boat fare on the Catalina Express is not included. Participants should make those reservations as soon as possible if they do not live on the Island. Lunch at the Restaurant at the Airport in the Sky is not included and participants need to bring or buy their own lunch. \nParticipants need to come prepared for a full day outside in the field\, standing and walking. Sturdy\, close-toed shoes\, sun protection\, and a re-fillable water bottle are required. Some walking on uneven terrain should be expected.

SUMMARY:Cyanotype Workshop with Oriana Poindexter
DESCRIPTION:Register Today!		\n \nJoin photographer and marine scientist Oriana Poindexter for an interactive cyanotype workshop at the Wrigley Memorial & Botanic Garden. Learn about this early alternative photographic process and use organic materials\, such as giant kelp and Catalina native plants\, to create your own cyanotype prints using photo chemistry techniques first developed in the 1840s. \nCyanotype is an alternative photographic process used to create photographic prints in the distinctive shade of Prussian blue and white without the use of a camera\, exposed with the sun and developed in water.  This workshop will teach you the fundamentals of the cyanotype process\, its history\, and will culminate with each participant creating at least three original cyanotype prints. \nThe first portion of the workshop will involve an introduction\, demonstration and selection of materials. The second portion will be a printing session. If you have materials you’d like to bring to use for printing (sentimental objects\, dried botanicals\, etc)\, please feel free to bring them. \nRegistration fee includes all materials and instruction as well as light refreshments and seaweed snacks.

SUMMARY:10th California Islands Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The Symposia have been held every five years (or so) since 1965 and address the variety of complex environmental\, sustainability\, cultural\, and historical issues found across the California Channel Islands. Presentations cover a wide scope of subjects including marine and terrestrial ecology\, biology\, botany\, history\, archeology\, geology\, oceanography\, and climatology. \nThis is a time of great challenge and opportunity for the California Islands and surrounding water of the Pacific. Multiple stressors\, including warming oceans\, introduced species\, pollution\, and resource extraction are impacting marine and island ecosystems. The 10th California Islands Symposium presents an opportunity for key stakeholders and managers to discuss and address these threats and potential solutions\, It is also an important forum to highlight the extensive ongoing efforts and successes to restore\, protect\, and sustain the marine and terrestrial ecosystems unique to the California Islands. \n		\n			REGISTER
