SUMMARY:Naturalist 2 Training
DESCRIPTION:Register Today!		\n \nThis 7-hour excursion into the wildlands of Catalina Island expands on the concepts covered in Naturalist 1 Training. Education staff will guide you through a course-work book while exploring the landscape and ecosystem of Catalina. \nThe Naturalist 2 Training field excursion runs from 8:30am-3:30pm and begins and ends at the Conservancy’s Trailhead Visitor Center. \nCourse workbook is included in the course fee. Boat fare on the Catalina Express is not included. Participants should make those reservations as soon as possible if they do not live on the Island. Lunch at the Restaurant at the Airport in the Sky is not included and participants need to bring or buy their own lunch. \nParticipants need to come prepared for a full day outside in the field\, standing and walking. Sturdy\, close-toed shoes\, sun protection\, and a re-fillable water bottle are required. Some walking on uneven terrain should be expected.

SUMMARY:Together In Nature: Symbiosis Watercolor Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Register Today!		\n \nEcological exploration and artistic practice meld together with this immersive Art Meets Science workshop. Join us for a guided\, place-based experience led by a Catalina Island Conservancy naturalists. Participants will explore symbiotic relationships found across the Island\, learning how plants\, animals and ecosystems interact and depend on one another.  \nArtist Adrienne Kinsella will guide participants in watercolor techniques designed for painting in the outdoors. Through demonstration and hands-on practice\, participants will learn how to observe closely\, capture natural forms and translate ecological relationships into expressive watercolor studies while working directly in the field.  \nDesigned for adults of all skill levels\, this workshop encourages curiosity\, careful observation and creative expression. \nWhen and Where \nMeet at the Trailhead Visitor Center (708 Crescent Ave) in Avalon at 9:30 a.m. for a shuttle into the wildlands. Participants will return to the Trailhead at 3 p.m. \nImportant to Know \nPlease bring your own snacks and lunch\, along with a reusable water bottle. Come prepared for a field day with layers\, sun protection\, long pants and sturdy shoes. Participants are responsible for booking their own ferry tickets (cost of ferry ticket is not included) to and from Avalon and should plan to arrive by 9:30 am.

DESCRIPTION:Register Today!		\n \nJoin us for our free monthly after-school series on Monday\, February 23\, 2026\, from 2:15 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Trailhead Visitor Center.  \nEach month\, we’ll explore a new theme and engage in hands-on activities that celebrate the natural wonders of Catalina. This month’s focus is Nature’s Teamwork. We will learn about pollination and how plants and animals mutually benefit one another as we enjoy snacks and complete a simple experiment and craft. \nAdditional Details: \n\nLocation: The Trailhead Visitor Center – Second Floor\nTransportation:  All Avalon School participants will be picked up from the lower turnaround at school and shuttled to the Trailhead by Conservancy staff. Please choose your pick-up option when registering (parent pick-up at the Trailhead at 4 p.m.\, shuttle back to school\, or allowed to walk home from the Trailhead).\nCost: Free for all participants.\nSnacks provided for all participants.\n\nStudents must have a signed permission slip to participate. Permission slips will be distributed in classrooms and are due by Friday February 20\, 2026. For those who register online\, a link to the permission slip (Google Form) will be sent via email after registration. SUMMARY:Catalina Mushroom Excursion with Mycologist Stu Pickell
DESCRIPTION:Register Today!		\n \nCatalina Island is home to a diverse ecosystem of wildlife and plants. But it also provides ideal conditions for a range of fungi to grow. \nTag along for a day of fun-gi when we venture into Catalina’s wildlands. Our guide is Stu Pickell\, a veteran mycophile\, award-winning macrophotographer and avid community scientist. After getting a taste for mushroom foraging while living in the Pacific Northwest\, he’s spent the last 10 years in Los Angeles documenting the fungal biodiversity of his native Southern California. He currently works as a field collector for the Fungal Diversity Survey’s CA FUNDIS project\, the first state-funded fungal documentation and conservation project of its kind. Learn about Island fungus and discover how different types of mycelium grow and benefit the broader ecosystem. \n \nThis event will begin at the Trailhead Visitor Center on Saturday\, Feb. 28 at 10 a.m. A complimentary shuttle will take participants into the wildlands and return to the Trailhead by 2 p.m. \nWhat to Bring \n\nA packed lunch\nSunscreen\nA reusable water bottle\nLayered clothing\, as temperatures may vary throughout the day\n\nImportant to Know \nParticipants should come prepared for being outside in the field\, standing and walking.
