SUMMARY:Naturalist 2 Training
DESCRIPTION:Register Today!		\n \nThis 7-hour excursion into the wildlands of Catalina Island expands on the concepts covered in Naturalist 1 Training. Education staff will guide you through a course-work book while exploring the landscape and ecosystem of Catalina. \nThe Naturalist 2 Training field excursion runs from 8:30am-3:30pm and begins and ends at the Conservancy’s Trailhead Visitor Center. \nCourse workbook is included in the course fee. Boat fare on the Catalina Express is not included. Participants should make those reservations as soon as possible if they do not live on the Island. Lunch at the Restaurant at the Airport in the Sky is not included and participants need to bring or buy their own lunch. \nParticipants need to come prepared for a full day outside in the field\, standing and walking. Sturdy\, close-toed shoes\, sun protection\, and a re-fillable water bottle are required. Some walking on uneven terrain should be expected.

Explore the connection between Catalina’s terrestrial and coastal ecosystems through the rich knowledge of Indigenous people who have cultivated deeply rooted relationships with the land and its resources. \nJoin us for an excursion guided by Gabrielle Crowe\, Co-Chair and Secretary of Environmental Sciences for the Gabrielino-Shoshone Nation of Southern California. Through storytelling and hands-on exploration\, Gabrielle will guide participants through this intricate history. \nEvent Details \nThis event begins and ends at the Trailhead Visitor Center. Meet here at 8 a.m. for the shuttle into the interior. Plan to return to the Trailhead at 1:30 p.m. If you’re traveling from the mainland\, please note that Catalina Express boat fare is not included and reservations should be made as early as possible to secure your spot. \nKnow Before You Go \nPack a lunch and snacks\, a reusable water bottle and plenty of sun protection. Wear layered clothing\, long pants and sturdy hiking shoes suitable for rugged terrain.

This month’s focus is on Catalina Island’s human history: Let’s Learn About Pimugna’s First People! \nAdditional Details: \n\nLocation: The Trailhead Visitor Center – Second Floor\nTransportation:  All Avalon School participants will be picked up from the lower turnaround at school and shuttled to the Trailhead by Conservancy staff. Please choose your pick-up option when registering (parent pick-up at the Trailhead at 4 p.m.\, shuttle back to school\, or allowed to walk home from the Trailhead).\nCost: Free for all participants.\nSnacks provided for all participants.\n\nStudents must have a signed permission slip to participate. Permission slips will be distributed in classrooms and are due by Friday November 14\, 2025.  For those who register online\, a link to the permission slip (Google Form) will be sent via email after registration. Meet at the Trailhead Visitor Center for a shuttle ride at 9:15 a.m. to the Wrigley Memorial & Botanic Gardens. \nThe Garden part of the tour takes place 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. with an optional hike from 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. \nParticipants receive free entry to the garden.
