Welcome To Volunteer 2009 Vacations

Join us for a Volunteer Vacation this year!  The Island’s 76 square miles are covered in broad valleys, isolated coves, two thousand foot peaks, which adds to the challenge of your personal involvement. Help preserve the rare native plants and animals on Santa Catalina Island, just twenty-two miles off the coast of Southern California.  The Island’s 76 square miles are covered broad valleys, isolated coves, two thousand foot peaks, which adds to the challenge of your personal involvement.  Assist with the rare opportunity to help in the restoration of the interior from the fire of May 2007.  It is a grand undertaking to help assist Mother Nature and restore the ecosystems of this precious Island.

In 2009 we are offering two levels of involvement.

OPTION A – Catalina Adventurer
The Catalina Adventurer is for someone who wants more of a physical challenge.  The benefits include vacationing at a private camp with beautiful views of the coastline, and mainland cityscapes, and becoming part of a unique conservation initiative. An oh, the stars imagine no city lights and the stars lighting up the sky.

Details Include:

• Participants must be at least 18 years of age.
• Volunteer Vacations begin on Monday and end on Saturday and includes four days of service and a naturalist activity. 
• The project difficulty level is moderate to strenuous and may include the following types of activities:  hiking up to one mile on uneven terrain, monitoring seedling with repeated kneeling and rising, and fence removal.  Strenuous could include invasive plant removal on steep slopes or handling heavy tools such as post hole pounders.
• Accommodations are at the Laura Stein Volunteer Camp and are located in a secluded area with breathtaking views.  The camp has two canvas tents on raised decks with eight padded bunks, flush toilets, and hot showers that are located on site.
• A fully-equipped outdoor kitchen with cookware, utensils, barbecue, stove, sink, refrigerator and the coolers are provided.
• Enjoy themed dinners and delicious fresh-baked desserts prepared by local volunteers and restaurants each night of your stay.
• An outdoor kitchen with cookware, utensils, barbecue, store, refrigerator and coolers are provided.

Cost: $180.00 per person

Option B — Catalina Explorer
The Catalina Island Conservancy has partnered with Catalina Island Vacation Rentals in a new program, which offers the best of both worlds.  The Catalina Explorer likes to volunteer but also enjoy the comforts of home. It is a nice combination of experiencing Island history and assisting in the preservation of our beautiful Island for a complete vacation experience.

Details Include:

• Explorer Volunteer Vacations begin on Sunday and end of Saturday.
• Participants are adults and children (minimum age is 12 years if accompanied by a parent).
• A sample itinerary could include a half-day Jeep Eco Tour on Monday, one full day of service on Tuesday, a two-hour walking tour of Avalon on Wednesday, a half-day of service at the James A. Ackerman Native Plant Nursery in Middle Ranch on Thursday, a free day on Friday and a half day windward beach clean-up on Saturday.
• The project difficulty level is light to moderate and may include watering, beach clean-up and trail maintenance.
• Participants will stay in a vacation home booked through Catalina Island Vacation Rentals – a private cottage or condo in the heart of Avalon or an ocean view condo.

This package includes:

• Conservancy Membership at the Explorer Level

• 2 tickets to the Wrigley Memorial Botanical Garden
• 2 tickets to the Catalina Island Museum
• Lunch in the field on the full service day
• Historical walking tour of Avalon

Cost: $498.00 per couple or $249.00 for individuals
